Eider down duvets
Exclusive eiderdown duvet from Outpost Lånan
No other duvet filling is so light and gives off so much warmth as eiderdown.
The fluff from the eider duck’s breast has a special quality. In contrast to down from ducks and geese, eider down has small barbs which keep it together. This provides eiderdown duvets with a unique capacity to insulate.
Peace and tranquillity are vital on Lånan while the eider ducks are brooding. The keepers make sure that they are not disturbed by mink, otters, eagles or ravens.
When the eggs have hatched, the eider duck takes her ducklings down to the water, then the collecting of down can begin.
The down has to be collected, cleaned of egg shell and laid out to dry. Afterwards it must be shaken out, sieved on the harp, and then given a final thorough cleaning before it is transformed into the world’s best eiderdown duvets.
THE LÅNAN EIDERDOWN
Real, handmade eiderdown duvets
Each year we produce handmade eiderdowns on Lånan with down collected from the eider ducks. What makes the Lånan duvet so special is that instead of being processed by machine, it is cleaned by hand. That way the down is treated gently and therefore retains its natural springiness.
Each nest contributes about 16 grams of clean down. 1,000 grams of down from about 65 nests are needed for each eiderdown. Each year we produce 7-8 eiderdowns on Lånan.
We manufacture eiderdowns in size according to order and all our eiderdowns are delivered together with a certficate of origin, a book telling the history of Lånan and a sample of the down in your duvet.
